This House Sparrow Tenemant Bird box is a good sized box with four 30mm holes along the front face, allowing our sociable Sparrows to live together in one large habitat. Other birds can use this box too, so it will be helpful to all town and city House sparrows looking for a place to nest or roost overnight. The house sparrow is a very social bird. It is gregarious during all seasons when feeding, often forming flocks with other species of birds. They roost communally and while breeding nests are usually grouped together in clumps, so this box is ideal. The box comes with fixing screws for fences or walls, however wire for tree fixing and hole protection plates to protect from squirrel or woodpeckers can be purchased in addition. The roof lid is opened by two swivel clips, so access is very easy for humans, although difficult for squirrels to gain access! The base has drain holes to ensure the box remains clean and dry for the nesting birds. The ideal positioning is on a sunny face of a building but in the shade under eves of a roof and prefers drier conditions. Please see the specification sheet for dimensions.
All the timber I use is 19mm thick European redwood Pine and is sourced from a U.K company with a superb sustainability policy. The timber is left natural rough sawn to enable the fledglings to climb out when they are ready to leave the box. The boxes are made from a very durable and robust thickness of timber that is chunky and strong. It will be resilient to all weathers and has proved to be a lovely home for many breeding birds and even a resting space overnight for individual birds.
